This page contains pictures and technical specifications to help one differentiate between the different STi Version Imprezas throughout the years. The page starts off with the basic Versions (I to VI and New Age) and progresses through special editions like the 22B and the RB5. Any questions or comments may be directed to me via email.
STi Version
The start of all the madness. The STi Version was first built in 1994, a year after the introduction of the Impreza to the world. This is the "homologation edition" Impreza, which was built and sold to allow the use of the Impreza body shell in the World Rally. Previous to this time, the Legacy had been Subaru's standard rally vehicle. It was offered in the four door body style only, and featured the characteristic hood scoop, hood vents, and massive foglamps that people recognize as "Impreza" around the world.

STi Version II
The STi Version II retains all of the exterior features of the STi Version, with the addition of color-coded door handles. The skirting remains black eurethane, and will not be color-coded until the Version 4 or 5. The low rear spoiler found on the STi Version (and the US Impreza RS) carries through to the STi Version II, and will do so straight through the Version IV.

STi Version III
The STi Version III is the birthplace of the Gold Rims as found on the US Spec 1998 Impreza RS, so sought after these days. Every STi III sported these rims stock, and every Type R/RA from Version 3 to Version 6 utilized these light but strong rims. The STi Version 3 was the first model to sport the newer style rear bumper cover, which so many of the Impreza RS owners in the US wish they had, as the rear spats available to us fit this cover perfectly. Every STi from now to Version 6 will utilize this bumper cover. Major changes to the STi line at this time are the introduction of the wagon and the 2 door coupe bodyshells. The Version III is the beginning of the Type R two door bodyshell, off of which legendary Imprezas such as the 22B and P1 will eventually be built.

STi Version IV
Physically, the STi Version 4 has not changed- there have been no major styling changed since the STi Version (the Version 1, though it was technically never called that). The engine at this point changes over to an open-deck block, and the rear 2-pot caliper is introduced to the STi line.

STi Version V
The Version 5 sees an upgrade on the exterior- a new front bumper is notable, with slightly larger fog lamps and new turn signals, plus the characteristic front brake vent holes. The rear spoiler becomes much larger, with a more effective airfoil design. The front grill now protrudes over the front bumper by about an inch, offering a more aggressive looking front end. All body parts (mirrors, trim strips, etc.) are color-coded to the body paintwork (on all but the Type R/RA models). A new, multifaceted headlamp design is adopted.

STi Version VI
The Version 6 bears little physical change from the Version 5. It gains a front lip spoiler that is color-coded to the body color, a slightly more aggressive pitch to the airfoil on the rear spoiler, and 6-spoke gold alloys that shave and extra half-pound off the weight of the previous 5 spoke wheel. The STi black/red/gray alcantara interior is retained.

New Age STi
The New Age STi bears little outward difference from the standard New Age Impreza WRX, though a few badges and a larger hood scoop will give it away. The brakes and suspension have been upgraded to STi specs with the aid of companies like Brembo, and the engine sports a larger intercooler and turbo, and has the addition of AVCS (Active Valve control System, akin to the VTEC system of Honda).

WRX-STi 22B
A rare beast indeed. The 22B starts life as an STi Type R, and just gets better from there. The 22B was outfitted with a closed-deck engine, metal gaskets, sodium-filled valves, molybdenum-coated internals to reduce friction- all in the name of power. The exterior features huge fender bulges to accomodate a wider track than the standard Type R, plus an adjustable rear spoiler, BBS Electra alloys wheels, height-adjustable headlamps, and the exclusive Sonic Blue Paint scheme. The 22B features the DCCD electronic center differential for variable front/rear split, and a special Alcantara interior. 400 units were orginally made, selling out within 8 minutes (so it has been rumored). 24 additional units were produced for Subaru UK, and made road-legal by Prodrive, who did not fail to add a few goodies of their own to these 24 units.

UK 300
The UK300 is a special edition of the New Age Impreza, modified by Prodrive and limited to 300 units. Among the enhancements are styling/aero changes like the front lip and rear wing, plus the upgraded ECU and other items in the "Prodrive Performance Package" that ups the power and torque of the standard New Age Impreza considerably.

Prodrive P1
The P1 begins life as an STi Type R, but is transformed to Prodrive specifications upon arrival in England. It had to be extensively modified to fit UK crash specifications and the needs/expectations of the public. Among other aspects, the suspension sytem is replaced and the orginally-inteded 13:1 STi-spec steering rack was replaced with the standard 15:1 to make for a more stable ride.

555 Edition
I could find very little information on the 555 Edition Impreza, as most of them seem to turn up in France or the Netherlands, and frankly, I do not speak nor read either language. They were produced across several years, and were most often painted in World Rally Blue, though some models seem to have been available in Black Mica as well. Production appears to have stopped on the 555 Edition as of about 1998 or 1999, though with the recent return to sponsorship of the Subaru World Rally Team by British American Tobacco (the folks responsible for the "555" livery on the older WRC) production will likely begin anew.

S201/Electra One
The S201 is the production version of the Impreza Electra One concept car. The concept car was based upon the STi Version 6 engine, though the actual production car saw a slightly upgraded engine producing 294hp instead of the standard 276hp. The car is famous (or infamous) for its exotic tri-level rear spoiler and other characteristic bodywork. The twin HID projection headlamps of the Electra One concept car were replaced with standard multifaceted reflector headlamps, with the HID's being optional. The production S201 was blessed with many STi "aftermarket" parts, including the struts and springs, rear lateral links and trailing arms, and the STi intercooler.

Terzo

A total of 333 units were produced, with Terzo badging, floormats, and special interior plaque.
