Just another informational page on how to modify your existing gas cap to accept the chromed STi Gas/Oil Cover. This was done on my 2000 Impreza RS. Any questions or comments? Please feel free to email and ask.
Well, you will find it immediately apparent that the STi cover will not even begin to fit on your stock gas cap. See all those ridges around the edges? They need to go away, so get violent with a grinder or some form of sanding device. You will need to grind those edges off until you have a completely smooth profile to your gas cap, as illustrated below:
After the sanding, this really could not get any easier. On the edge of the STi cover are two small phillips (+) head screws with points on them. You can see one of them below:
Back these screws out just enough to jam the cover on top of your gas cap. While pressing down on the cover, simply tighten the screws down firmly. You will end up with something like this:
With that, you are done. It's very easy to do, just mind your fingers while you are sanding/grinding away, and be careful not to go a bit too deep into the plastic. Sanity check your sanding against the chrome cover from time to time, and take it slow. It comes out great in the end.
