The rear subframe lock kit (Whiteline part # KSB750) is designed to reduce the movement of the rear differential carrier by bolting it directly to the body of the car. The rear differential carrier is normally attached to the car by means of noise-reducing rubber bushings, which this kit will effectively removes from the equation. It is applicable to all Impreza models (WRX and STi included) and some Legacy models as well. Questions or comments may be directed to me here.
Admittedly, this does not look like too much- just a pair of thick, tapered bolts. However, the effect this $20 set of hardware provides is not to be underestimated. Installation is very easy- you need only loosen four bolts, tighten and torque these two locking bolts down, and then snug up the four you loosened to begin with. Let's get started-
Start by backing out the four 17mm rear differential carrier bolts but do not remove them. They are easy to distinguish as they have rubber isolators around each bolt. You only need to back them out a few turns- just enough so that the whole differential carrier is loose. There are four of these bolts in total, two per side, and they will be found at the very end of the rear differential carrier. They will be on either side of the holes where the large 17mm subframe locking kit bolts will go. This is the driver side:
And this is the passenger side. With the four main carrier bolts loosened, it is time to install the subframe locking kit. The threading is very fine, so start the bolts by hand and then go to tools afterwards, to insure you do not strip the threads on the locking kit bolts. Bottom these bolts out. Torque the lock kit bolts and the four subframe carrier bolts down to 70 foot pounds.
