The Subaru 4 pot pads are quite a bit different from the standard one and two pot calipers found stock on most Subarus in the USA, and these instructions will help you change your brakepads should you be fortunate enough to own them. For the 04+ USDM STi owners, this page will get you along changing the pads on you 4 pot Brembo front calipers and give you the basic idea of changing your rear 2 pot pads as well. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me and I will try to answer them.
I'm going to start with a bare caliper, as that is what I had to start with. If you need to first remove your pads, start at the bottom of this page, and then work your way up.
You will get an assortment of hardware with your genuine brake pad kit (part # 26296FA100 by the way). From left to right they are solid shims (4), pin retainer springs (2), vented shims (4), and 8 locator clips (I do not use these and they are not shown), and a grease packet or two (also not shown). In addition, you probably should grab 4 new slide pins and 2 anti rattle clips (SubaruProParts.com sells them) as well.
Start with a bare pad; the one picture shows the wear indicators on the pad. Smear some of the grease in the packet on the back of the pad (I have left it off in all photos for clarity). Do this for each of the 4 pads.
Place a vented shim over the pad, and smear more grease on the vented shim. Do this for each of the 4 pads.
Place the solid shim over the vented shim. Do this for each of the 4 pads.
Starting from the outside of the caliper (the side that says "Subaru" on it) push the slide pins partially into the caliper, and place one of the pad sets without the silver wear indicators on the two pins, with the braking surface of the pad facing inwards and the shims facing out towards you. Do this for each caliper.
Now, place one of the pads with wear indicators on the pins, facing the opposite direction this time around. Do this for each caliper.
Slide the pins all the way through to the far side of the caliper, and grab one of the pin retaining springs. Slip the tips of the spring through the small holes in the tips of the slide pins, then press the center tab of the spring through the hole in the caliper. The hole is small, but it will be directly in the middle of the two larger holes for the slide pins. Do this for each caliper.
Now, spread the pads to the far edges of the caliper (closest to the "pots") leaving a space in the middle that your rotors will eventually take up. Take the anti rattle clip and hook it under one slide pin and over the other. Do this for each caliper, and you are done!
